‘The moment of truth (tribute to Ella Fitzgerald)’

Ella Fitzgerald, yes, returns to the Palau

The pre-history of our festival began with Ella Fitzgerald (together with Duke Ellington), when the two performed in a double bill (she with Jimmy Jones’s trio, he leading his orchestra) on January 25, 1966, at the Palau de la Música Catalana. The success was thunderous, and promoter Joan Roselló (then owner of the Jamboree) decided to create the Barcelona Jazz Festival that same autumn.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of that historic concert, we’ve commissioned the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra (BJO) to present a concert dedicated to Fitzgerald, whom BJO director Dani Alonso describes as “one of the most important singers in history, and within jazz, the most famous and the one with the longest career—from her beginnings with Chick Webb at the Savoy to her final concert before retirement at Carnegie Hall in 1991.”
